General Rules

  • Minimum team size: 4 players; maximum size: 6 players.
  • All players must register prior to the start of the Rally. Click here to register.
  • All players must ride in one vehicle. It is not acceptable to divide and conquer. Players who start late may join their team wherever the team is at that time, but they may not submit any missions until they have joined the team.
  • Safety first! The vehicle must have seating with seatbelts for all players. See additional safety rules below.
  • A panel of judges, including people who do not personally know the players in our community, will judge submissions and award points. The panel's decisions are final.

Where and when?

The Carpool Rally will take place on Saturday Night, November 20, 2021.

RALLY TIMELINE:

  • 8:00 PM: Meet at Young Israel (optional)*
  • 8:25 PM: Start your engines! (optional)**
  • 8:30 PM: Carpool Rally Begins***
  • 10:30 PM: Carpool Rally Ends
  • 10:45 PM: Refreshments, Rally Highlights, final judging at YIH
  • 11:15 PM: Presentation of trophy

* You do not need to meet at Young Israel at 8:00 PM, however please note that people may ask questions at that time, and answers will be given publicly. We will serve some refreshments and show some highlights from the first Carpool Rally. This is also a great time to size up your opponents!

** Start Your Engines! At this point, you should already have the app installed on your phone (see "How to prepare for the Carpool Rally" below), and at the start of the Rally, a list of missions will magically appear. This stage is also optional. You may wish to start from a location that is more centrally located to where you think most of the action will take you once the Rally begins.

*** You do not need to start at exactly 8:30. There are no points for finishing first, only for completing as many missions as possible. That being said, it's important to note that not all missions are available for the entire duration of the Rally. Some will expire before the Rally ends; some will not appear until a set time after the Rally has begun.

How to prepare for the Carpool Rally

  • Come up with a name for your team. Submit your team name to Avi Frier.
  • Download and install the GooseChase app. Only one person on your team needs to do this. Here are some links: iPhone | Android
  • That email will also contain a link to join the official Carpool Rally Whatsapp group. Joining the Whatsapp group is not required, but in the interest of transparency, the Whatsapp group will be the ONLY place where you can ask questions once the Rally has begun. All questions and answers will be seen by all players.
  • Familiarize yourself with all of the rules on this page!

How the game works

At exactly 8:30 PM, the Carpool Rally status in the app will change from "Waiting To Start" to "Running". At that time, a list of missions will appear in the app.

There are 3 types of missions:

  • Photo/Video: These missions will require you to use the app's built-in camera to prove that you have accomplished what you were instructed to do. Some of these missions will allow you to submit either photo or video; some will specify photo only; some will specify video only. You will have the opportunity to submit a comment with each photo or video. Points are immediately awarded upon submission, however the actual score may be adjusted once the judges have had a chance to review your submission.
  • GPS Check-In: These missions will require you to report to a specific location and allow the app to acquire your GPS position. There is no need to get out of your car as long as you are close enough to the hinted location. If you are not at the correct location, the app will immediately notify you that you are not in the right place and need to keep trying. There is no penalty for an incorrect check-in; you simply will not get credit until you find the right place. All GPS Check-Ins are within a 5-mile radius of the shul.
  • Text: These missions will require you to find out a piece of information and submit it by typing it into the app. If you do not provide the correct answer (or if it is spelled incorrectly), the app will immediately notify you that you need to try again. There is no penalty for an incorrect submission; you simply will not get credit until you submit the right answer.

You might not have time to complete every mission you've been assigned, so choose wisely!

Here are some additional factors affecting the missions:

  • Start Times: Not all missions will appear in your app at 8:30. Some missions will begin at preset points throughout the event. You will receive a notification when a new mission is available.
  • End Times: Some missions will expire before 10:30. Expiration times will be listed in the mission description if applicable. Once a mission has expired, you can no longer receive points for completing it.
  • Points: All missions have point values listed. Some descriptions specify ways in which you can earn bonus points. Bonus points are awarded at the sole discretion of the judges. Bonus points may be added even when the description does not specify that bonus points are available. Similarly, points may be deducted at the judges' discretion if they feel that the mission was not fully accomplished.
  • Rejected! If a submission is rejected by the judges, you will receive a notification. The points will be deducted from your score and you will have the opportunity to try again unless time has expired. Depending on how quickly the judges see your submission, it is possible that you will not know a submission has been rejected until after it is too late to fix it. There is nothing we can do about this.

Other information available from the app during the game:

  • Missions: This is the screen where you'll spend most of your time once the game has begun. It lists all missions available to your team. Completed missions will disappear from the "Remaining" list on this screen and move to the "Completed" list.
  • Activity Feed: Many of the missions are set to appear in the Activity Feed (missions with right and wrong answers do not appear in the feed). As teams submit their photos and videos, all players will be able to see the submissions.
  • Standings: As teams receive points, you can see where you stand in real time.
  • Notifications: This screen logs all notifications you have received.
  • Team Summary: This final screen shows what your team has accomplished so far and how many points you have.

Safety Rules

Road Safety:

  • Your vehicle must have seating with seatbelts for all players.
  • All laws of the road must be followed.
  • The safety of the team while in the vehicle is the responsibility of the driver of the vehicle.

COVID Safety:

  • It is the team's responsibility, and up to the team's discretion, to take any necessary Covid-19 precautions while the Carpool Rally is going on.
  • When at the shul before and after the Rally, standard YIH rules apply (masks optional for vaccinated participants; required for non-vaccinated).
  • There will be times when you need to exit your vehicle and do things, both indoors and outdoors, in public places. You should follow all of the same precautions that you would normally follow when you go to the store, the park, etc.
  • Use caution when completing missions that require you to interact with people who are not not on your team. Maintain a safe distance from others when interacting with them.
