Journal/Dinner 2020

Journal/Dinner 2020

Dear Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale Members:

We are pleased to announce the honorees for our 38th Annual Journal Dinner. Maish Staiman will be our Guest of Honor, Michael Baratz will receive the Presidential Leadership Award, Elie and Naomi Baratz will be presented with the Young Leadership Award, and the Founders Award will be presented to Dr. Sam & Deborah Rand and to Robert Aschheim.

Maish Staiman and his wife Tzivia have been community members since 1998. During their 35 years of marriage, the Staimans have been deeply involved in community and shul life wherever they have lived. They are blessed with four children and eight grandchildren.  Maish has been a YIH Board Member since 2004 and served with distinction as shul President from 2015 to 2017. He currently serves as House Committee Chair, and is a volunteer on the Security Committee and on the Chevra Kadisha.  Maish previously served on the board of the Broward Jewish Federation from 2012 to 2015 and currently serves on the PATH Board of Directors.

Michael Baratz, originally from Staten Island, moved to Hollywood with his wife Ellen in 1995. Here they raised their two children, Tyler and Emily. Michael devoted nearly twenty years of service to our shul as an officer and member of the YIH Board.  Michael served as shul President from 2011 to 2013. He also served on the Ritual Committee as a Gabbai, and continues to assist the shul in many ways, including his creation of and continuing work on the Yizkor Book. Michael helped found the community's Shomer Shabbat little league for our community’s youth.  He is proud to be a member of both the winningest Panoply team in YIH history and the reigning Carpool Rally champion team.

Elie and Naomi Baratz both grew up in South Florida and are graduates of Katz Yeshiva High School. After a brief hiatus in New York, they moved back to Hollywood in 2013, where they are raising their two children Max and Ricki. Elie and Naomi were beloved members of the YIH Youth Department staff from 2013-2019; serving as Teen Directors with dedication and care. It is a pleasure for us to recognize this homegrown talent, as Elie was born and raised in Hollywood, and has called YIH home for his entire life.

Robert Aschheim has been an active YIH member since 1978. Along with his wife Donna they have raised three beautiful children: Mayer, Cara and Rebekah.  Robert served on the YIH Board of Directors for many years. He served on the By-Laws Committee as well as the Rabbinic Search and Hiring Committees. He served as shul President from 1985 to 1987, and he was honored at the 2010 Journal Dinner. Robert is an attorney who has provided his legal expertise to our shul when we needed it; for instance when the shul purchased property and during the building expansions. Robert continues to be an active participant in shul activities, including the YIH basketball league.

Dr. Sam Rand was one of the original eight founders of YIH nearly 50 years ago. His son Greg's Bar Mitzvah was the shul's second. Sam says of Deborah his wife of 33 years: “My beautiful wife has blessed me with Jacob, who has brought me such joy and happiness in my life for the past 20 years. Jacob has made us so proud as a group leader in the YIH Youth Department, in addition to his many other successes.” The Rands derive much nachat from their five granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren. Deborah and Sam are always thrilled to participate in the social events of our shul and continue to be active and vibrant members of the YIH “family.”

The 38th Annual Journal is being prepared in conjunction with the dinner which will be held on Sunday, February 23,2020 at the Eden Ball Room in Hollywood.  In addition to recognizing our honorees, you may want to pay tribute to a special friend or memorialize a loved one. We also hope you will join us in soliciting ads from friends, family and business associates.  Two complimentary dinner tickets will be yours for the first $1000 raised in ads.  This makes it very easy for everyone to attend the dinner- a beautiful and fun affair not to be missed.
This is a crucial fundraising effort which supports the ongoing programs and continued expansion of our Young Israel.
Please join us on Sunday evening, February 23rd to celebrate with our honorees and the Young Israel family.
Thank you in advance for your participation.
Sincerely,
Journal & Dinner Chairs
