CHOLENT COOK-OFF RULES:
Preparation:
- All preparation takes place in the YIH kitchen.
- Contestants choose from four prep time slots listed above.
- Contestants purchase their own ingredients. Ingredients must be new and sealed for kashrut verification. Fresh vegetables and dry beans do not need to be sealed.
- Common seasonings will be available for contestants' use, i.e. garlic powder, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, paprika, onion powder, minced onion, etc. Inquire for availability of seasonings not listed here.
- Utensils will be available for contestants' use. It is the contestant's responsibility to wash all utensils after using.
Cooking:
Contestants will have four options for cooking their cholents:
- Large 22-quart crock pots: YIH has 8 of these. They will be reserved by contestants on a first come, first serve basis.
- 9" x 13" foil pans, left in the oven overnight.
- 21" x 13" foil pans, left in the oven overnight.
- Your own crock pot. Must be brand new.
Serving:
- Cholents will be served from individual tables at the kiddush on January 14.
- You may decorate the table as you wish, and include signage with the name of your cholent (naming your cholent is optional, but highly recommended).
- You are encouraged to stand at your table, and to serve and interact with the tasters throughout the Kiddush.
- This will also enable you to "dress the part" if your cholent is from a particular ethnic origin that would lend itself to a costume or theme. Keep this in mind when you choose decor for your table!
- Tables will be numbered for voting purposes. If a name is chosen for your cholent, the name will also be included in the voting area.
Judging:
- Judging will be made by secret ballot at the kiddush.
- Each family will be given eight voting chips, which they may use to vote for up to eight cholents.
- Voting will close 30 minutes after the kiddush opens.
- All votes will be counted by the judges after voting closes.
